As a psychologist and mom of 6, I’m always looking for ways to improve my family’s overall health, mental health, and wellness. Lately, I was working on a challenge for my family when I thought, “Hey! Why not make it available to everyone?” Thus, the Family Wellness Challenge was born!

Why “Wellness?”

There’s so much more to life than just “health” OR “mental health” OR “social health” or…you get the picture. “Wellness” means more than just doing “ok” in one area of life. It means working in all of the 5 Core Areas (physical, mental, emotional, social, spiritual) at the same time, little by little, to create the synergistic effect we call “wellness.”

 

Why “Family?”

Because the truth is, as families, we either help or hinder one another in our pursuit of wellness. If one family member is suffering from mental illness, for instance, the entire family will feel the effects. If one family member isn’t sleeping (especially if it’s a child), then the whole family’s sleep schedules are likely to suffer. It’s great to work individually to increase wellness, but it’s far more powerful, and produces more long-lasting effects, if we work together, as a family, to change not only individual members but the family system as a whole.

 

Why “10-Day?”

Because 10 days is doable–for adults, teens, and children. It’s not too long and not too short. It allows time to begin to develop a new “habit,” while also not feeling overwhelming.

 

Why “Challenge?”

Because, as I like to say, “this is how we grow.” If we stop pushing ourselves, and our families, then we stop progressing. The idea of a challenge is to CHALLENGE you and your family members. It is a fun, easy way to bring families together for a greater goal–to promote healthy striving, support, and maybe even a little motivational competition. Plus, we FEEL GOOD when we accomplish a challenge! And doing it together, as a family, just amplifies the goodness

The goals of this challenge are to:

1) Increase family members’ awareness and understanding of physical, mental, emotional, social, and spiritual wellness practices;
2) Increase family connectedness, wellness and flourishing;
3) Improve individual and family health, mental health, wellbeing, and happiness.

ANYONE can join–from young children to adult children to grandparents–because you can customize each person’s goals. That’s the beauty of this challenge!

Then, using the guide, set up your family’s goals and your start/end dates! I will be running the challenge with my own family between Nov 12-21, so we will end just in time for Thanksgiving. Imagine inviting ALL your family to participate, and then discussing how grateful you are for all you’ve learned at your Thanksgiving dinner!
